Port Orange

Port Orange is a fun and lively town on the beach front of Volusia County, full of many diverse people. It is part of the Halifax Area of Florida and included in the Daytona Beach Metro Area. The name Halifax Area, also un officially the Fun Coast and Surf Coast, refers to the River next to the City. Further known as one of the safest cities in Florida, Port Orange is a popular choice for all people. Near the Spruce Creek River and the Florida Inter coastal, there are many parks and outdoor areas ripe for touring. People enjoy easy access to The World’s Most Famous Beach, and many other famous sites, just a few miles away. As a result, Port Orange is a fun city, with lots of good food, family friendly things to do, and quality schools.

The City of Port Orange does a lot to ensure that it is a great place to live. Top-notch schools, good weather, and fun events are just some of the many reasons the city gives to live here. The City takes care of its residents and values them greatly. People from all over the country come to Port Orange in search of a good life for their families. The circle of people here is fun and charming.

Port Orange History

The City of Port Orange is founded in 1804 when the Spanish Crown grants 995 acres to Patrick Dean. This became Dunlawton Sugar Mill Plantation, allowing the city to be separate from Dr. Andrew Turnbill’s New Smyrna Colony. At that time the city is being known as Mosquito Inlet and is now Ponce Inlet. The name and location change to Port Orange in 1867. This change is made by Dr. Hawks.

There are so many relics that still remain of those early days. One such place is the Old Sugar Mill Gardens, which has gone by many names over the years. This includes a brief stint as a Dino theme park called Bongo Land. The Mount Moriah Baptist Church, built in 1911, provides a place of worship for the descendants of Freemanville. Freemanville was a colony of former slaves that settled here after the Civil War. Of course, the magnet school on Clyde Morris and Taylor known as Spruce Creek High School has a Hawk mascot. Which is a bird that is native to this area, and also an homage to the man who gave this City its final name.

Port Orange Here & Now

With a town motto of “Unique by Choice, Not by Chance” it is clear that Port Orange has pride. Being a fun, lively area for people of all ages, it’s not a shock. The city is comprised of 150 “neighborhoods” including sunny beach front condos and gated, private airports. There is easy access to multiple Colleges and the city is almost directly between Orlando, Jacksonville, and Cape Canaveral. Certainly, this allows residents and tourists to enjoy world-famous sites such as Disney World, only an hour away. Being in such a prime spot makes Port Orange the small town choice for people who want big-city events. Therefore, it is a vast place within Central Florida. Businesses like Cunningham hold up the stable and locally owned network economy. In short, there are so many fun things to do, inside and outside.

With all kinds of facilities, state-of-the-art shopping centers, and restaurants like the world famous Aunt Catfish’s. Likewise, with lush green spaces, there is never a dull moment. The city center hosts all kinds of yearly events for its residents, drawing in crowds from all over the county. Family Days is a local favorite, offering arts & culture for all ages, and local troupes and bands, rides, and contests.

The Great Outdoors

Port Orange has a myriad of lovely outdoor areas to enjoy, from gardens to beaches to bike trails. There’s truly something for everyone! Certainly, Port Orange has over 20 great parks and nature areas for a variety of things to do. It is perfect for fishing, biking, dog walking, paddling, or simply enjoying a picnic. Similarly, there are also tons of outdoor dining with water front seating for anyone simply wishing to enjoy the nice weather. Certainly, Port Orange is blessed with sunshine and warm temperatures year-round.

The City is also close to nature areas just outside of its limits such as the Ormond Loop Preserve. In addition, we have Hontoon Island, Rose Bay, and much more. Being so close to Daytona Beach means there are also many roof top restaurants and bars. Especially for those who wish to grab a drink and enjoy the sun or the night sky.

Sunshine State of Mind

There is no doubt that the City of Port Orange has many cool features. As a result, making it is the perfect place for anyone in Central Florida to call home. With great public and private schools, and access to higher learning it is a great place to raise children. Being the safest city in the county with a nationally recognized fire & rescue team means all people can relax. With so much to do, it’s no wonder its city motto truly reflects the culture within it’s borders. There is no place like it.
